Michiko met the Emperor Akihito at the tennis match in Karuizawa in 1957. Many officials were opposed to their marriage. But young people have been persistent and were married April 10, 1959.
The couple had three children, and they have even gone against tradition and decided to bring them up on their own, without giving them to a court valet.
